Elizabeth Leekya Vacit was introduced to Dave and I years ago by her sister Sarah. Sarah, Elizabeth and
Elizabeth's three daughters lived all together in Leekya Deyuse's house near the old mission. In her eighties,
Elizabeth beaded every day at small table in the livingroom using beads her granddaughters sent her from
Chicago where they attended school.
Sadly, Elizabeth passed away some years ago.
We were fortunate to have purchased a number of sets of her dolls - Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus, Comanche Chiefs
and Navajo Ladies, Mr. & Mrs. Peter Cottontail .. and the ornate (but tiny!) Zuni ladies wearing a traditional
manta. I asked Elizabeth where she learned to bead and she replied (in Shiwi) that her mother had taught her.
Then the family showed Dave and I a beaded horse that Elizabeth's mother had made. Wow!
From time to time we offer a set of these dolls here on the site. They are real treasures! Here is a set for
Easter - Mr. and Mrs. Cottontail. They have matching outfits and each carries a basket full of 'eggs'. They have
suede ears and a loop for hanging. At Christmas time we always have a small tree that has nothing on it but
Elizabeth's beaded figures and some small Christmas balls she made for us. She was a delightful, shy lady -- and
we feel honored to have met her!
