Stewart Quandelacy's rounded medicine bears are like the "poster children" for Zuni fetishes. Kent McManis has used them on
two of his books cover's about Zuni fetishes.
Stewart is one of the talented Quandelacy siblings. He and wife, Priscilla, are prolific carvers and though he does carve other
animals (lions and eagles) he is supremely known for his rounded medicine bears. They come in all colors and sizes. Some have
heartlines (or multiple ones!) and some are just plainly beautiful.
This is a medium sized bear carved of onyx-travertine. Travertine is formed when carbon dioxide from deep inside the earth
flows thru fissures and underground rivers and streams and acidifies in water to the point of dissolving limestone. As it flows, it
deposits layers of calcium carbonate to form the rock we know today as travertine. The pools at Havasupai reservation are
formed from travertine.
Stewart has inlaid the eyes and zig-zag heartline of beautiful turquoise. A beautiful treasure from Zuni ... doncha want it?????? [grin]
