When Dave and I first started collecting, most of Andres' lions were of this size. Now it's almost unusual to see one of his carvings over three inches long.
He's used dolomite to create this old style lion. The tail is up and over the back which is how all lions used to be carved. Prior to the introduction of high speed Foredom or Dremel hand-held carving tools, it was more difficult to carve a long, flowing tail without breakage. So the carvers usually draped the tail over the back. It's an elegant profile and Andres uses it regularly.
This lion is pale adobe pink with some yellow on the right side. Some dark veining is evident through the lion's head and extending part way down the body. Nice color and really splendid carving. Andres' has inlaid the eyes of turquoise. Unsigned.
