This sweet, shimmerying maiden is carved of Mother of Pearl by Kenny Chavez. Kenny can, and does, carve just about anything.
He has a huge variety of carvings in his repetoire. He's the cousin of David Chavez, Jr. and brother Vince, and also of Ephran
Chavez and half-brother Herbert Him, Jr. David and Ephran were quite prolific carvers at one time but we rarely see their work
today. Vince continues to carve and is best known for his buffalo. Herbert Him, Jr. was never a prolific carver and, according to his dad, is working in landscaping currently.
The corn maiden is a very important part of Zuni culture. You may read more about them here.
This maiden is carved in two
pieces (the maiden & the base) from Mother of Pearl that has a slight rainbow irridescense. Very pretty. Kenny has carved the
traditional maiden hairstyle and inlaid the eyes of turquoise and the mouth of jet. The body of the maiden is etched to appear as
corn. The maiden's robe is also etched with minimal detail. We've never offered a Kenny Chavez maiden before, so don't miss
this opportunity to adopt her! Signed.
