This pretty merlot colored bear is by Emery, of course, and is carved from red marble from Pakistan. It's a deep maroon color
with just few veins of white running through. The bear has a jet "arrowhead" offering tied on with turquoise and red coral.
We've not seen this material before -- although it is similar in color to magnasite hematite, this is a true marble. Emery is known
for his classic bear shape and for his productivity. He carves bears (and sometimes wolves) in a multitude of stones. Each is well
carved, beautifully finished and offered for a fair and reasonable price. He does not sign his work.
Though he has lived in Zuni Pueblo for a long time now, he did not grow up there. A chance encounter with a Zuni bear fetish in
a southern California gift shop started his journey homeward. Certainly the return to his ancestral art has enriched the lives of
countless collectors.
BEAR: The bear represents the western direction in a protective and healing fetish set. He is associated with the color blue and known for his curative powers. Though all bears are healers, white bears are particularly powerful. Characteristics associated with bears include strength, courage, adaptability, healing and spiritual communion.
