A collector recently asked if we could get Herb to carve an eagle and an badger to round out a directional set she was working on. Sometimes we are able to work with carvers and obtain special orders and this time it worked out. Herbert carved some extras and we're offering this eagle to you - our collecting family!
Herbert has used jet (of course!) to make this larger eagle (3" long). The head is nicely rounded and the wings and tail are etched beautifully. The eyes are inlaid of turquoise. The eagle is signed on the bottom in Herbert's usual double H fashion. Herb is the son of
Leonard Halate (d.) and brother to Reva, Vella, Marvelita and Pansy. He signs his work with joining double H's.
EAGLE: The guardian of the zenith or sky, the eagle is multi-colored and he is part of both a healing and a hunting directional set. He is the messenger to the gods and associated with power, balance, dignity and grace. Highly revered in Zuni, the eagle's feathers are still used in sacred ceremonies.
