Of course we want you to appreciate the carver's skill and the symbolism and importance of Zuni fetishes ... but do you ever think about the stones? Or the processes it took to create it? Maybe I watch too much science television but I just love thinking about the age and creation of these beautiful rocks. Even as a kid I wondered 'what is inside a rock?' (And, yes at about age 5, my mother took away my hammer when I was intent on finding out. I KNOW, I was (am?) a weird kid.)
Fabian has carved this glorious little ram from Toluca onyx with colors and banding that are borderline miraculous. Truly. But don't take my word for it. Here .. hold him, then get back to me on that!
Ram: The Zuni's use a coyote fetish when hunting for bighorn or mountain sheep but it is in Hopi-land that mountain sheep have the most importance. Some rams will look like goats and without knowing the artists' intention, it may be difficult to discern a ram or mountain sheep from a pronghorn, deer or domestic goat.
