Powerful and symbolic - Herbert Him has carved this beautifully detailed badger guarding his pueblo from turquoise that appears natural. Herbert is known for his puebloan carvings and he carves a variety of animal figures with his puebloan architecture but badgers are among my favorites. Badgers are revered for their digging abilities and the fact that they always den with a southwestern exposure to maximize the sun's warmth. The cliff dwellings of ancient puebloan people are also built in this way to shade in the summer and provide extra, natural heat in the winter.

Dave and I noticed that Herbert's puebloan carvings took on added detail after a trip we shared with he and Johanna to Chaco canyon. He was so interested in the stonework, the vigas, the windows and doors that abound in Pueblo Bonito. And not long after this visit, we began seeing a stronger emphasis on the architecture within his complex carvings.

This powerful badger is surely protective of this pueblo and he will guard your casa with as much tenacity! Signed.
