Usually, when shipments arrive here in the woods from Zuniland, it's a bonafide occasion and we all (Dave, myself and The Mom) all gather around and unwrap each one individually, ooh and aaah and pass it around so we all have a good look. Mom has been to Zuni with me and, over the years, she's developed a real appreciation for these beautiful creations. But of all the Zuni fetishes, the buffalo must be her favorites. She always likes them the best.
This handsome bison was carved by Clive Hustito from augite serpentine. It's not particularly large, measuring only a hair over 1.5" long, but he's quite powerful and strong. Augite serpentine seems to have a metallic element to it that makes it appear heavier in the hand. Anyway, despite his small stature, you'll find this buffalo to be mighty indeed. His powerful shoulders, head and tail are all etched to perfection. And from his horns to his tiny cloven hooves he is just amazing. He has turquoise inlaid eyes but was left unsigned.
