Derrick is related to the Laate family of carvers and hung out with his uncles Maxx and Pernell (d.) at the carving studio near Corn Mountain. He is married to Carletta Suitza, sister to Destry and Donna, and cousins to Ron and Ricky Laahty.

This feline is ready to pounce from above from its stumpy throne. Carved from mule deer antler its eyes are inlaid of turquoise and it is initialed "DK" in his traditional way.
