This gorgeous bear is the largest carving in this offering. Manuel has used Colorado white marble for the massive medicine bear which bears his familiar angular lines and powerful stance.
An elaborate offering bundle features a serpentine badger, Picasso marble mountain lion, a buffalo tooth, serpentine eagle, Picasso marble bear and a serpentine wolf. All are tied on with turquoise nuggets, melon shell heishe and red coral beading. The eagle rests atop a hand-knapped arrowhead and a colorful layer of feathers from macaw and pheasant. Feathers are not traditionally used in Zuni any more but Manuel routinely adds them to his carvings. I asked him once if this was in homage to Sharon's Navajo heritage. He replied that it was really in homage to a dear Hopi friend who had passed away. As beautifully decorative as Manuel's carvings are, nothing is without meaning or symbolism.
Manuel and his family will again be showing at Santa Fe's Indian Market to be held August 22-23.
This bear is very large and heavy and will incur additional shipping charges. It weighs 2.5 lbs.
There's a special page here at Zuni Spirits devoted to the Manuel Weahkee family .. you can read more about them here.
