In 1997, New Mexico Bead and Fetish had an exclusive arrangement with a young and talented carver, Brian Yatsattie. David purchased this exquisite piece and it has been in his collection since that time. Made from fossil ivory, the two eagles are carved from a single piece of ivory (fossil) and their wings are highly detailed. Both the eagles have turquoise inlaid eyes. Very unique, beautifully carved and sure to be a favorite.
A brief note about fossil ivory. It can be mammoth, mastodon, walrus or narwhale and has been fossiled from thousands of years of being buried under permafrost, ice, snow or it may be washed up on the beaches of Alaska or the Artic Ocean. Only Alaskan natives (Eskimo, Aleuts or Indians) who are one-fourth degree or more, or who are enrolled under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act are allowed to harvest this material for sale in jewelry making or for carving. Some fossil ivory will be pale in color while other ivories have minerals leached into the pores from the freezing/thawing processes over time.
In recent years we have noticed the numbers of fossil ivory carvings diminishing. Whether this is because of availability or expense .. we can't be sure.
