Maxx has long been a favorite of ours but it's hard to think of him without also thinking of Pernell Laate, his brother, who passed away last year. We never saw one without the other. Our thoughts go out to the family ... Pernell was known for his carvings of people while Maxx is best known for his carvings of animals. We hope to see more work like this from Maxx .. a reminder of the style of carving his brother was known and loved for.

This exquisitely carved buffalo dancer is made of fossil ivory. The organic nature of fossil ivory (and it's relative scarcity) makes it one of our favorite carving materials. Though quite small (only 1" 9/16" tall!) the detail of the dancer's regalia is outstanding. Quite the treasure .. don't hesitate too long! Signed.
