Antler pieces evoke a different feeling of respect from me. Not only are the carvings often elegant and rich (like this one) .. there's also knowing that the carving material is organic. That a hunter likely brought down this deer and the venison will feed the family while the rest of the carcass finds other uses. It could have happened this year - or a thousand years ago.

Elton Kaamasee is the carver of this symbolic six directional set. He's carved the mountain lion (north), the wolf (east), the badger (south), the bear (west), the eagle (zenith) and the mole (nadir) in their appropriate places and then burnished them for added depth and color. Their eyes are etched and inked. A beautiful piece of art, a timeless piece of culture and a reminder that, taken care of, this world provides for us all.
