We consider ourselves so fortunate to have had a couple of really figurative pieces to share with you recently. A grandmother and child by Vince Chavez were offered last posting and now we have this wonderful corn grinding maiden by Randy. She's carved in three pieces. The maiden, kneeling, with her grinding stone in her hands; the metate on which the corn is ground into meal; and the bowl for the corn and ground corn meal. All three pieces are made of turquoise and the maiden is heavily inlaid with coral and jet. The metate and bowl are inlaid with white Mother of Pearl ears of corn and 'meal'.

Keep in mind the largest piece is the maiden and she measures under 1.5" tall! Such a beautiful piece of Zuni culture. And Randy has signed the bottom of the maiden.

If you would like to read more about the Maiden's characteristics and attributes click here. And click here to hear "Corngrinding Maiden" in Shiwi, the language of Zuni.
