S O L D

This colorful mole was carved from banded dolomite by Leland Boone. Leland is the son of Lena Boone, grandson of Edna Leki (d.) and he. along with his mother and sister (Evalena), still carves in a very traditional manner.

Moles are the guardians of the nadir or underworld. Because they were often found in the kitchen gardens (and kept them free from pests) they were considered sacred and are part of a six directional set. Some carvers will carve moles without eyes. Others will inlay eyes and some will carve only "slits" for eyes, like this one by Leland.

He's a cute little fellow and a beautiful stone. He wears an abalone offering tied on with red coral and turquoise. Unsigned.
