Eagles are believed to carry the prayers of the Shiwi's to the Father Sun God. This eagle is sheltering a tiny maiden in his powerful wings. The carver is Faye Quandelacy and we thought that this carving was a departure for Faye until we noticed the eagle on page 29 of Kent McManis' Volume II and on page 90 of his expanded edition of ZUNI FETISHES & CARVINGS. So, perhaps unknown to us .. she's been carving eagles all along.

The eagle holds the maiden on one side while petroglyph symbols are etched in display on the other side. The eagle's feathers are heavily textured and a single coral inlay represents the maiden's necklace. The carving is unsigned. Faye is one of the large and very talented family of Quandelacy carvers which includes Stewart, Andres, Avery, Sandra, Albenita and Wilmer. And now the children and grandchildren are also carving. Ellen Quam Quandelacy [d.] has quite the legacy!
