On one of our excursions into New Mexico we visited the Bandelier National Monument. And it was there I experienced, for the first time ever, chili cheese fries and a Stellar's Jay at lunchtime. The chili cheese fries were AMAZING .. but it was the Stellar's Jay (who clearly was used to being fed chili cheese fries!) that made my day. We have blue jays in Texas and they are loud, aggressive and obnoxious. Stellar's Jays might also be a bit 'outgoing' .. but their smoky gray head (with a crest!) and lapis blue body makes them a lot more tolerable. At least for the short term .. ha!
Edison Bobelu and his birds delight me. Parrots, hummers, red-winged blackbirds .. I love them all. And now he's making Stellar Jays. He's used a nice specimen of turquoise to form the body of the this jay, and attached a head carved of jet. The feathers and body are nicely etched and he's inlaid black across the tail feathers. A superb example of Zuni creativity .. and their appreciation for the natural world. (The chili cheese fries in Zuni are pretty good too!)
