Of all the sea creatures carved by Zuni artisans my favorite would have to be the sea turtle. There's something very endearing about them. I actually saw one, when I was about eight, leaving the beach in the pre-dawn hours when my family was camped on Galveston Island. Later in life, I saw another from a sailboat in Galveston bay. I think they might be as curious about us .. as we are about them.

Vivella Cheama is part of the talented Cheama family of carvers. Her husband is Fabian, brother of Arvella, Lance and Wilfred. She carves beautifully and textures her subject with vivid detail. This sea turtle is made of turquoise and has an etched shell, body and head. The eyes are inlaid of jet. Very sweet .. and signed on the front right flipper but very indistinctly.
