It's interesting to me how Zuni fetish collections evolve. When I was a newbie I wasn't particularly drawn to Mother of Pearl. Then, on a trip to Zuni, I saw an entire case full of Celester Laate (d.) Mother of Pearl carvings. Suddenly, I was hooked and hooked in a big way. There for a while, it was all I could see! And the same was true with maidens. For several years in our early collecting days, they held no appeal to me. And then one day - BOOM! - they seemed the most magical and lovely ladies and I had to collect them from every maiden carver!
The sophistication of maidens has evolved rapidly and this lovely girl, carved by Vicki Quandelacy, is indicative of the elegance and grace projected by some maidens. Vicki has chosen a beautiful specimen of shell to work with. One side is pale golden and that maiden is carved to have a body of corn. She wears an elaborate lapis, azurite and turquoise pendant necklace. Azurite and red coral decorate her robe along with etched stars and dragonflies. She carries a turquoise filled (symbolic of blue corn) olla on her hip. Her facial features are etched and inked. She's spectacular!
Her sister is nearly white but there are some golden areas. She is wrapped in a robe decorated with dragonflies and stars and points of jet, turquoise and red coral add color to her robe. Her equally fabulous necklace is made of turquoise and red coral. And her olla is also filled with crushed turquoise. The natural sway of the stone gives movement to both maidens and they rest solidly on a pedestal of jet for stability, given the slender proportion of a shell in nature. The carving is exquisite. Signed "VQ" in the shape of a fish on the bottom.
