I'm usually not susceptible to non-traditional Zuni fetishes. USUALLY. There are those rare charmers like hippos with oxpeckers on their backs, sows with piglets lined up at her belly and this: a poodle! There are lots of dogs in Zuni but I have never seen a poodle! Most seem to be Chow hybrids and they are large and loud but never unfriendly. But somewhere in Zuni there must lurk a poodle or two. Or perhaps Felicia was inspired by watching a dog show on TV!

Felicia is the eldest of Carol Martinez's twelve children. We've never known her to carve before but we received this and one other dog carving (a bulldog) and we are delighted. She's used chocolate serpentine and 'groomed' the poodle in a standard cut. The collar is inlaid of turquoise and abalone and the nose and eyes are jet. An adorable paw print is painted on the rump - similar to Carol's hand print on her ponies. We hope to see more from Felicia and we hope this carving makes you smile as brightly as it did Dave and I.
