This is our second lapis piece from Maxx Laate this shipment and it is a darling little thing! This posture he created is so natural to these creatures - usually we will see them looking back over their shoulder just before they disappear into the brush - for they heard, smelled and spotted us LONG before our sighting of them!
It never ceases to amaze us how the artisans of Zuni can carve tiny chunks of stone into masterful fetishes. It goes to show that very little material is wasted and the smallest scraps of stone can be utilized as inlay or even carvings themselves. Maxx is famous for miniatures as was his brother, Pernell (d.), who was the human figure miniature champ particularly in fossilized ivory carvings.
Together Maxx and Pernell are responsible for teaching carving techniques to most of their family members, especially brother Willard Laate, the nephews, Elton and Derrick Kaamasee, and Derrick's wife Carletta Suitza and her siblings Amanda, Donna and Destry, plus Jerrold Laheleon and his family -Garrick, Eric, and Calvin and son Colin Weeka. Also the other family members Celester (d.) and Dannette Laate, Yancy-Robert Halusewa Randy and Gale Lucio, Sly Walela and friend Lewis Malie. Now THAT is an impressive group!
The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the carving is signed "MAXX" on the bottom. Do YOU need a pocket fox?
