Leland Boone is the greatgrandson of Teddy Weahkee (d.) and the grandson of Edna Leki (d.). His mother Lena Boone, father Rignie Boone(d.), aunt Dinah Gasper, and uncles Anderson Weahkee and Peter Gasper,Sr. are all established Zuni fetish carvers and are legendary artisans in their own right. His sister is Evalena Boone and his cousins, Micheal and Chase Weahkee, Braden (d.), Debra, Elroy, and Peter Gasper, Jr are carvers also, as is his wife Daphne Quam.
He carved this "old Style" mountain lion (tail carved up and over the back) from an increasingly rare stone which is also used in jewelrymaking and sold by the gram. Considered one of the most scarce, beautiful and unusual stones in the world, this stone comes only from one very small area in the Western deserts of Utah, the Brush Wellman beryllium mine, where beryllium is mined for use in missile nose cones and many other high-tech metallurgical uses. The area is not open to the public for collecting any more, and most of the material found as nodules is ground up as part of the beryllium extraction process - so, not only is it rare because of the sole location, it is even more rare (and consequently expensive) because so little of the material ever escapes the ore crushers. It often has a "crackled" appearance and is called "Tiffany Stone".
The abalone shell arrowhead offering bundle consists of red coral and turquoise beads and is tied with sinew. The carving is unsigned which is common for the carver and the family in general.
