The Cheama family is known for their spectacular talent, their vision and the precision of their carving style. This beautiful gold-lipped Mother of Pearl rattlesnake was carved by Lance. Of the three Cheama brothers, Wilfred, Fabian and Lance, Lance’s work is the hardest to come by.
Lance has diamond etched the scales on this reptile so that the surface just glimmers in the light. Mother of Pearl sometimes will have bore holes from a creature that drills into the shell while the living animal resides there. This carving has such a cavity on the left side of the snake’s body (with an exit hole on the bottom). This is not a flaw, but a reminder of the organic nature of the carving material.
The serpent’s head is slightly lifted, as are the rattles, which is in perfect imitation of how a rattlesnake moves. But we promise, this one won’t! Snakes are revered in Zuni for their ability to live and move "between worlds", since both the underworld and the surface are their realm. Very special and signed.
