Over the years there have been many, many things that have caused Dave and I to appreciate the fetish carvers of Zuni but high on that list is always their incredible creative use of materials. Sullivan Shebola is probably best known for his duck carvings made of shell and other natural stones. But here he has presented us with a beautiful turkey carving. The fanned tail feathers is a scallop shell (with a highly detailed "rear view"), the body of the turkey is formed of another pearly shell (variety unknown) and the head and shoulders of the turkey are etched black marble. The wattle is red coral, the beak is (beautiful!) sugilite and the eye inlaid of turquoise. Beautiful, natural materials all .. but who would have ever thought to put them together in this configuration to make a turkey? No one but Sullivan! Signed with initials.
