My mother went with me to Zuni once. She had a great time and enjoyed meeting all the carvers who would come and go from the various trading posts. Maxx and Pernell (d.) always appeared together. They were kind to her and even signed her copy of Kent McManis book ("so I can explain to my friends just what it IS you are doing ..."). They seemed to enjoy immensely being asked for their autographs! Pernell died suddenly a couple of years ago and I am sure he is missed greatly by all his family but certainly most by Maxx. Maxx continues to carry on though we have discerned a change in his work. I guess it's just part of life .. carry on.

This tiny turquoise bear might not be big in all the usual methods of measurement but trust me when I say that this little bear's spirit is massive! His winter-coat body is massive and the fish in his mouth is likely his last one just before he disappears to sleep off a cold and lonely season in his den. Fish and bear are all carved of one stone. The eyes are inlaid of jet and Maxx has signed the bottom.

We were so taken with this "little" guy .. he got a movie. You can view it here.
