Lena Boone is one of the most-loved traditional carvers in Zuni. Together with her family, children, grandchildren, sister and other extended family, she continues the legacy left by her grandfather Teddy Weahkee (d.). Her mother Edna Leki (d.) was also revered for her very traditional carvings and fetish pots. This handsome mountain lion is carved from raspberry serpentine with the tail up and over the back. The side offering bundle is spiney oyster with turquoise and red coral beading. Lena has inlaid the eyes of turquoise.

The mountain lion is the guardian of the northern direction. It is most associated with the color yellow but can be any color. If you're building a mountain lion only six directional set, this would work very well as the elder brother of the Zenith since the stone is multi-colored. Unsigned which is standard for Lena's work. A beautiful feline carved by a dear lady.
