Like a first date or your first glass of champagne .. Zuni fetishes leave an impression. (Are you snickering?) Seriously! I remember the very first Curtis Garcia sgraffito marble buffalo I ever saw. It called to me from across a crowded room at Pueblo Trading in Zuni. I swear my pulse just quickened. Okay, I'm kidding about that, but Curtis's work is memorable.
He starts with a piece of black marble which he carves with rounded curves and sleek lines. The, after meticulously polishing the carving, he etches, freehand, all the motifs you see. Designs used in pottery, jewelry and even weaving are replicated in swift, but sure, detail.
You can see why, then, I am so taken with this howling coyote. Weighing in at over a quarter lb., he's a big one. He'll need lots of room in your fetish cabinet, preferably with a window nearby so he can still howl at the full moon. Signed.
