Leland Boone has carved this colorful bear from Rainbow Calsilica. When rainbow calsilica first arrived in Zuni there was a HUGE hoopla about it. Fetishes carved from it were selling for quadruple their true value. The initial story was that it was a natural material. I was even shown pictures from "the mine". Dave and I steered clear of it because we felt strongly that it was manmade material and the inflated pricing by other dealers (now defunct) unethical.

Eventually the uproar died down. It's generally accepted that it is a manmade material now. It's not our favorite "stone" but sometimes a carver will surprise us. With Leland's bear the appealing quality to this layered material is that it reveals multiple bears in silouette within the body of the bear. Leland has gifted this bear with a pink shell arrowhead offering and red coral eyes.

Leland is, of course, the son of Lena Boone and sibling of Evalena. He and his family continue to carve traditional fetishes in the style they are known for. The bear is the guardian of the west. In an all bear directional set, this would be the 'above' guardian since it is multi-colored. Signed "LB".
