This beautiful bear comes to us from a private collection and it was purchased originally from Zuni Art in 2002. It was sold to our collector as Herbert Halate but the initials on the bottom are clearly "DT" for Dion Terrazas. Herbert mentored Dion and the relationship was described to us as being a "family friend". We aren't seeing any Dion Terrazas carvings now for a couple of years, so we are not sure he's still in Zuni or carving.

In any case, his style was virtually the same as that of Herbert -- he carved almost exclusively in jet, gave his animals a single slab of turquoise and wrapped it with ambundant strands of (synthetic) sinew. The simplicity and fluid motion of the bear, along with the beautiful contrast of turquoise offering and eyes .. makes him positively irresistable!
