Stewart is a member of the Quandelacy family of Zuni fetish carvers and his siblings Andres, Wilmer, Barlow (d.), Dickie, Avery, Sandra, Faye, and Georgia Quandelacy, and Albenita Yunie are all children of matriarch Ellen Quandelacy (d.). The new generation Brian and Jeffrey Yunie, and Vickie, Channin, Leon, Stuart, Chad and Talia Quandelacy and Kateri Sanchez, Woody Mackel and Fonda Lasiloo round out the carving group.


Medicine bears which have their noses to Mother Earth, are the most popular carvings made in Zuni, and Stewart Quandelacy medicine bears display the iconic shape of modern bears in the artwork of the American southwest. These medbears are among the favorite bruins of seasoned collectors and newbies alike.

This bear is created from a piece of yellowish dolomite that is pink in the middle. The eyes and heartline/breathline are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise. This bear is special for it is the first Stewart medbear that I have personally seen which is signed in any way. The bottom of the feet are initialed S.Q. Zuni.
