Green Zacatecas turquoise is from the Socavón (Cavern) de las Turquoise Mine, Municipalidad de Mazapil, Zacatecas, Mexico. There has been a rumor going around that Zacatecas turquoise is dyed and fake but that is mostly the blue form, which is actually turquoise-blue PROSPITE from the state of Zacatecas, Mexico. It has been fashioned into items for sale or sold as bulk turquoise and marketed as a turquoise substitute. It is found in the same valley but is NOT turquoise. Another mineral here in the States that is substituted for turquoise is HOWLITE which comed from the ground white, but is dyed blue and stabilized, then carved or cabbed as turquoise.
One of the things I love about the fetish carvers of Zuni is the way they sometimes utilize the stone in their designs. Normally it is a difficult concept to explain but in the case of this fetish it is plain to see. When a carver picks up a stone they turn it over and over in their hands to get an idea of the orientation of the grain which at times hints at the strength within the rock. However the grain or banding of the stone in this case has also been used as the heartline/breathline of the animal. Is it that the artist utilizing the grain in the rock or did the stone truly "speak" to the carver?
The eyes of the feline are inlaid of red coral. The arrowhead offering bundle is made of Mother-of-pearl tied with a turquoise nugget by sinew. The fetish is typically unsigned.
