Here we have a single strand Mother-of-pearl bird necklace carved by the late Leonard Halate (d.). Leonard was best known later in his life for his dinosaur carvings and for utilizing found objects as part of his artistic creations. It has been said that Whoopi Goldberg collected his work before he passed away. It is quite an amazing thing for a serious collector to be able to add pieces of this magnitude to a Zuni fetish collection. While the contemporary carvers are equally talented and are faithful to traditions and their ancestors, there is a lot to be said for the old time way of doing things and holding these old timer treasures in your hands is an honor and a privilege.

The shell is a mixture of Mother-of-pearl and gold-lipped Mother-of-pearl, and the center bird is carved of abalone shell. The necklace has a drop of 14 inches and the birds measure 1 1/4 inches long on the average. The eyes of the birds are inlaid of jet and the heishe traditionally comes from Santa Domingo Pueblo though that is not a certainty. These fetish necklaces are getting very very hard to find as are fetishes from this legendary carver. It seems that collectors are holding on to their pieces, and with good reason as these older pieces become investments that gain in value as time goes by. This would make a great collector piece for that very special person in your life.
