This stone when viewed in dim lighting appears like a simple dark solid brown rock, but in reality, and when viewed in full sunlight or bright indoor lighting, the true nature of its complex nature becomes starkly evident. When copper is formed, it is cooked and pressed and wetted, then cooked and pressed and wetted again and again until finally, it is usually covered under mass quantities of heavy sediment and then compressed some more over time until tectonic or erosional forces expose it at the surface to the miners and rockhounds searching for it. Copper complex minerals are those that form with copper in these complex processes, and they include turquoise (blue &/or green), azurite (blue), malachite (green), cuprite (red), tenorite (black), limonite (yellow), and many other minor players in this complex story. Many times where you find one you will find some of the others of this complex group. The matrix that it forms in is tinted and stained with any, most or all of these compounds which make up the color, and the amount of heat and pressure determine the density of that rock matrix.
All that being said, this stone is a combination of native matrix, visible metallic surface sheen and copper complex minerals compacted into this conglomeration of simple beauty. Vernon and Prudencia carved it into an small, abstract and modernistic medicine bear of simple beauty.
The rounded eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetish is initialed VLPQ ZUNI in typical fashion. It will make a great pocket fetish or simply one for the purse!
