This is an unusual eagle fetish from Zuni fetish carver Burt Awelagte. He is a nephew of Gibbs Othole and is one of the younger carvers to benefit from his uncle's tutelage, along with his cousins Jeff Tsalabutie (d.), Dee, Jeffrey and Clayton Edaakie, Jerome and Alonzo Esalio Jr, Alvin Calavaza, AlBurt Eustace and Seville, Tracy and Brion Hattie. Now that is an impressive group of carvers from one family!


This eagle is created from fishrock with an amber beak and is perched on a boulder of thinly layered malachite. The eagles feathers are highly detailed and well carved. The rounded eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetish is initialed BA on the bottom of the boulder in typical fashion. This is a well-carved fetish by Burt!
