Yowah is a small town in outback western Queensland, Australia in the Paroo Shire local government area. Yowah is
located 938 kilometres west of the state capital Brisbane. Boulder opal is unique to Queensland Australia and occurs in deposits
in weathered sedimentary Cretaceous rocks in the west of the state. The precious opal forms in veins and patches within brown
ironstone boulders. When the opal is mixed through the ironstone it is called matrix opal. Hardness ranges between 5.5 and 6
on the Mohs scale. Boulder opal is found in these siliceous ironstone concretions or boulders ranging in size from less than an
inch to more than 8 inches. There are 5 major opal mines and they are Winton, Quilpie, Jundah, Koroit, and Yowah. Concretions
up to 2 inches across, known as nuts, may host a kernel of solid opal or contain a network of thin veins of opal through the
ironstone. This variety of opal is prevalent at Yowah where the concretions form distinct bands and are called Yowah-nuts.
Todd inlaid the eyes and mouth of the corn maiden with sterling silver and the necklace of Sleeping Beauty turquoise.
The body is etched like corn kernels. The fetish is signed T W Y2K ZUNI on the bottom in typical fashion. This is an very elegant
corn maiden carving created from a fabulous piece of Yowah Nut Boulder Opal that will be a great addition to any Zuni fetish collection.
