Well before dinosaurs roamed the earth, over 350 million years ago during the Devonian
period, the land we know as Michigan was located near the equator. Covered by a warm, shallow, saltwater sea, the colonial
coral hexagonaria percarinata thrived with other marine life in tropical reefs. This fossilized coral consists of tightly packed,
six-sided corallites, which are the skeletons of the once-living coral polyps. The center of each polyp was the mouth and
contained tentacles that reached out for food. The hexagon shape of each cell and thin lines radiating out from the dark
“eye” in the center are distinguishing features unique to this fossil. It is the state stone of Michigan and is commonly
along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the United States deposited as glacial morraines after the ice ages.
Todd inlaid the eyes and mouth of the corn maiden with sterling silver and the necklace of Sleeping Beauty
turquoise. The body is etched like corn kernels and the the robe is etched with dragonflies, stars and a corn stalk on the
back. The fetish is signed T W '01 ZUNI NM on the bottom in typical fashion. This is an elegant corn maiden carving and
will be a great addition to any collection.
