Sonora Sunrise comes from the northern Mexican state of Sonora and was found in an old copper mine. It is 100%
natural and it was the hot new rock at the Tucson and Quartzite Gem and rock shows. Fresh from these shows, the material is
a blend of green to blue chrysocolla, red cuprite, and black tenorite and it is truly the most eye catching material in decades. It
cuts astonishing cabochons that are perfect for fine designer jewelry and also for carving Zuni fetishes as well. It takes
a surprisingly nice polish too. It's been on the gem scene now for a only couple of years and has become quite popular. It has
come to my attention that the deposit is almost played out so it will becoming rarer in the near future. The cabochons that are
on the market now are very expensive being sold by the gram, and a 10 gram two inch round pendant mounted in sterling silver
was recently priced at $600! This fetish is crafted from a mostly cuprite matrixed stone and has great red variations.
The Zunis have had extensive trade and general contact with the Comanche peoples for many generations. They have
a Comanche dance that is incorporated into their dance schedule every year. There are also Comanche pictographs on tribal lands,
so there are numerous carvers and beading artists that have Comanche examples in their repertoires. This warrior has a rattle in
one hand and a spear in the other. The feathered headdress indicates a high rank and he has a feather in his hair as well. He has
on some fancy pants, a sashed shirt, suspenders, a fox tail and mocassins.
The eyes and the rattle are crafted from Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the spear of black-lipped Mother-of-pearl. The
warrior sculpture is signed Ron Laahty Zuni NM on the bottom of his mocassins. This is a very large piece of what will be a very
valuable semi-precious stone in the very near future and the craftsmanship is exceptional. It has a kind of Mayan feel to it but it
is definitely a Comanche Warrior to be proud of !
