What a dazzling corn maiden fetish carving from Zuni artist Rick Quam II. The shell is irridescently colored and highly reflective of light. Abalone is a common name for any of a group of small to very large edible sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Haliotidae. Other common names are ear shells, sea ears, and muttonfish or muttonshells. They are found along the coastal waters of every continent, except the Atlantic coast of South America, the Caribbean, and the East Coast of the United States. The majority of abalone species are found in cold waters, off the Southern Hemisphere coasts of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, and Western North America and Japan in the Northern Hemisphere.

Rick has a modernistic style and the corn maiden has a simple round face and a flowing corn kernel body. The opposite side of the fetish is a portion of a corn bowl with its traditional stepped edges. It has tadpoles on the inside and outside of the bowl, which is a traditional Puebloan motif for corn bowls. The inside of the bowl is layered with turquoise, red coral and jet corn pollen offerings. The fetish is signed RICK QUAM II on the bottom of the carving. This is an unusual and unique corn maiden fetish from the cousin of Farlan and Daphne Quam.
