This stone is found in only one place in the world, a site of the mine is Marovato, on the Ambolobozo Peninsula in
the northwest corner of Madagascar. It is called Ocean jasper because the deposits are a part of the coastline and can only be reached
by boat and removed only during low tide. Ocean jasper is a variety of orbicular jasper, a type of rhyolite jasper named for the spherical
shapes that pattern the stone. Various local or commercial names have been used for the material, such as kinradite, oregonite, Owyhee
jasper, Ocean jasper and poppy jasper, depending on the source. However, the Ocean jasper of Madagascar is unique due to the beautiful
colors and markings it possesses. This stone is also known as the Atlantis stone because it was found in the turn of the new millennium
under the Indian ocean.
Another aspect of Ocean jasper that lends to its mysterious aura is the story of how it was found, or perhaps found
again would be more accurate terminology. Stories about the stone had existed since the early 1900s, and a few staunch mineral collectors
had passed through the area and traded the Ocean jasper back and forth with collectors for a short time, but subsequently the exact location
was lost. New rock was then refound along the coast in 2000 and the jasper vein was followed from the waters edge into the side of the hill
for about 45 yards. As the Ocean Jasper vein was followed it became thinner and thinner. The mine was totally depleted of quality stone in
2006, the life span of this find was only seven years. Another vein has since been found but it is poor grade, nothing like the original. You will
find the available specimens today becoming less and less attractive as time goes on.
Ron has double inlaid the eyes of this pudgy terrapin of Mother-of-pearl and then reinlaid them with jet. He weighs in at
a respectable 2.7 ounces. and is full of motion, color and personality. Make sure you do not miss out on this quite rare material for a Zuni fetish
