Herbert is someone I consider to be a good friend. We have had a great deal of fun over the years and he has taught me a lot about the Zuni way of thinking. Darlene and I took Herbert and his wife to Chaco Canyon National Monument and he was transformed from fetish carving artist to spiritual teacher and guide. He explained his understanding of the petroglyphs of the ancestors and the different shapes and meanings of symbols hidden from the view of the average tourist following the same path as we were. It was a day to remember and treasure. Elahkwa, my friend!

Herbert has used a chunk of yellow serpentine to produce this aquatic terrapin. He is a master of natural motion when he carves his fetishes, and this turtle is on guard and has spotted you staring at him. As all water creatures are, the turtle is one of the many animal symbols which serves as a prayer for moisture. Rain and snow is a constant necessity for all desert plants and animals, and symbolizes a request for abundance in our lives and an abundant harvest of crops to sustain us all.

The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the carving is signed HERB HIM ZUNI on the belly of the turtle. A quality natural realistic sculpture of Puebloan art created by a Zuni Master Carver in need of a good home!
