Sonora Sunrise chrysocolla in matrix comes from the northern Mexican state of Sonora and was found in an old copper
mine. It is 100% natural and it was the hot new rock for the last two years at the Tucson and Quartzite Gem and Rock shows. Fresh from
these shows, the material is a blend of green to blue chrysocolla, red cuprite, and black tenorite and it is truly one of the most eye catching
material in decades. It cuts astonishing cabochons that are perfect for fine designer jewelry and also for carving Zuni fetishes as well. It
takes a surprisingly nice polish too. It's been on the gem scene now for a only couple of years and has become quite popular. It has come
to our attention that the deposit is almost played out so it will be much rarer in the very near future. The cabochons that are on the market
now are very expensive being sold by the gram, and a 10 gram two inch round pendant mounted in sterling silver was recently priced at $600!
This stone is mostly a cuprite matrix but has a few inclusioins of chrysocolla and is speckled with tenorite.
Dee is also one of the recipients of the teachings, the experiences and the carving knowledge of Gibbs Othole. Gibbs has
passed on his incredible carving expertise with the many different members of his extended family and educated them on the characteristics
of the many stones that are utilized and inlaid by the fetish carvers and the jewelers of the Pueblo. Jeffrey, Clayton and Dee Edaakie, Alonzo
and Jerome Esalio, Jerome, Loren and Jeff Tsalabutie (d.), Saville, Tracy and Brion Hattie, Albert Eustace, Alvin Calavaza and Burt Awelagte
have all benefitted by that knowledge and experience. Along with Loren, these younger carvers exhibit the minimalistic and sleek modern
lines of Gibbs and his world class Zuni sculptures and fetish carvings.
Dee utilized an almost exclusive cuprite and tenorite specimen of Sonoran Sunrise for this awesome eagle fetish. It does
have minor inclusions of chrysocolla but they are difficult to see. He inlaid the eyes of a highly contrasting Afghan lapis. The elegant eagle is
signed Dee Edaakie ZUNI NM 5/12 on the bottom. This will truly be an exquisite centerpiece in your fetish cabinet!
