Maxx is one of the many masterful teachers of Zuni fetish carving for the younger generation, as all carvers
and carving families do in Zuni as a rule. They pass on the knowledge, experience and the techniques of the artform to family,
clan and friends. They also pass down the respect for the beliefs and practices of the Ashiwi, the People. The seasoned artists
speak to carving materials and it is said that the materials also speak to them. When the carving is finalized, there is a finely
finished Zuni fetish created through the harmony, expertise and talent of the artisan combined with Mother Nature as teacher.
Maxx is well known for his whimsical style of creating fetishes and this trumpeting elephant is a great example
of that concept. It surely must be a chest rattling blast as it appears this pachyderm may have strained itself in all of the exhilaration.
Even its tail is raised due to the strain of it all!
The raised rounded eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the sculpture is initialed in the usual manner
on the base of the fetish. One of the great whimsical MAXX L pieces to date IMHO!
