Charles is a member of the Laate family of carvers, so he has had a lot of great realistic carvers to learn from. Imagine being related to the Suitzas, Florentino Martinez, Elton and Derrick Kaamasee, Lewis Malie, the Weekas, Maxx, Pernell (d.) and Willard Laate, Jerrold Laheleon and the Najeras! It is no wonder that Charles is such a talented realistic carver.


This is a rendition of the seldom seen Over-the-Shoulder bear. Stewart Quandelacy makes them but few other carvers have been successful in producing ones that are NOT contorted looking. This is one of the best we have seen in recent memory. The fur is expertly etched, the posture is realistic and the carving is elegantly finished.


The eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise. The front paw is frozen in mid-step in a curved posture as many grizzlies that I have seen on Animal Planet. The carving is signed Charles Martinez, Jr Zuni N.M. on the belly of the bruin. This is one of the best realistic bears of modern Zuni fetish carving in my humble opinion. It will make a great addition to any well-rounded fetish collection.
