The Zuni purchase antlers at trading posts and some carvers collect their own season falls. This is from a very large piece of antler and Ruben has crafted this dead tree trunk filled with an owl colony! There are 3 expertly carved owls perched on top near the large nest that has three carved eggs laid in a clutch. There are three more owls peering from cavities in the side of the tree. They all have eyes inlaid of jet and the feathers are etched in great detail. The perched owls are carved away but for a small amount of material holding them in place. Ruben has become one of the great realistic Zuni fetish carvers, the proof is in this sculpture and the exceptional quality of this work shows through.
