Dolomite originates in the same sedimentary environments as limestone - warm, shallow, marine environments where calcium carbonate mud accumulates in the form of shell debris, fecal material, coral fragments and carbonate precipitates. Dolomite and limestone are very similar rocks and they are approximately the same hardness. They share the same color ranges of white-to-gray and white-to-light brown although other colors such as red, green and black are possible. Dolomite can be found in massive beds several hundred feet thick. They are found all over the world and are quite common in sedimentary rock sequences. Along with calcite and aragonite, dolomite makes up approximately 2 percent of the crust of the earth.

Vernon & Prudencia have found a pink, tan and red-brown piece of banded dolomite to create this large old style eagle - 4.5 ounces! They have incorporated their modern sleek style into the design. The X was an older way of creating simple wing patterns on the backs of the bird fetishes. The stair stepped primary feathers is great rendering of the wing design. The raised and rounded eyes are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and the fetish is initialed VLPQ Zuni in their usual manner. This will be a great addition to your Zuni aviary.
