Have we decided yet if this stuff is man made or not? I was shown a photograph of a "mine" where rainbow calsilica was supposedly being taken from the ground
in Mexico. But I think we pretty much know now that it is a man made material, right? Aren't they calling the latest renditions of this layered "stone" "fordite" now?
Enlighten us if you
know more about it .. It was all the rage there for a couple of years in the nineties. Whether it is a natural stone or not certainly does not disqualify it from being used in Zuni as a carving material. As you probably know, Leonard Halate (d.)
used discarded plastic objects, old combs and other found objects to adorn his fetishes back in the day. Creativity rocks whatever unknown form it comes in!
Marilyn Quam Lunasee has crafted her signature frog, in a very petite size, from this multi layered stone. He's purely adorable, with his turquoise
"rain drops" and Sleeping Beauty peepers. You do know that frogs are another of the many symbols associated with the prayer for rain. When you live in an arid environment
every drop of moisture is precious to crops, livestock and family. A Zuni friend of ours told us that, on one of his many trips to Washington, DC for Tribal business, he was amazed
how people would run from shelter to shelter with rain coats and umbrellas .. while he would stand openly in the rain and let it fall on his face in gratitude. Count your blessings,
always. Your rainy day might be an inconvenience, but there are others who would love to have that inconvenience!
Marilyn has signed this cute little fellow on the bottom in her usually way; a teeny, tiny scripted "Marilyn Q. Lunasee". (How DOES she do that?)
