We met Stuart early on in our trading career, providing him with
large conch shells for carving corn maiden story pieces. Since that time, he remains true to preferring shell for his
work .. and his passion for carving maidens has not waivered. This necklace
centerpiece is carved from Mother-of-pearl and Stuart has double-strung it with Santo Domingo brown
heishe, turquoise, pink shell and quartz beads with a sterling silver clasp. It has a 15 inch
drop.
The central pendant is a double sided corn maiden. One side, the maiden
is carrying an olla filled with Sleeping Beauty turquoise nuggets. She has a dangling necklace
of malachite, lapis, amber, and red coral beads. Her eyes are inlaid of jet and there are
dragonfly and star patterns on her robe.
The maiden carved on the other side has the same dragonfly/star designs with a turquoise
and a red coral inlaid bead along the left side. She, too, is adorned with a drop necklace of turquoise, jet, red
coral and amber beads and she has an apple coral sash with jet inlay. Most unusual! Her
robe also has the trademark triangular migration patterns used only by Stuart and this indicator can
be used as an identifier of Stuart pieces versus Sandra, Vickie or Faye corn maidens. This
is a very unique and unusual corn maiden fetish necklace that would really look good
around the neck of your significant other!!! (Darlene fully agrees on this point!)
