Augite is an important rock-forming mineral in many igneous rocks, especially in gabbros and basalts, and is also found
in some hydrothermal metamorphic rocks. The magnesium content is greater in augite. Augite is a part of an important solid
solution series of the pyroxene group. Its name is derived from the Greek word augites which means brightness and it is said
to owe its name to its serpent-like colours and patterns. Italian sculptors have sometimes termed it ranochia in allusion to its
resemblance to the skin of a frog. There is an old belief that the stones were effective protection from snake bites. In the US
it is found in St. Lawrence Co., and also on Staten Island,New York; at Montville and Hoboken in New Jersey; at Newport, Rhode
Island ; Grand Co, Colorado; Tillamook, Oregon; Newbury and Newburyport, Massachusetts; Lancaster, Chester and West Chester
counties, Pennsylvania; many localities in Vermont, California, North Carolina, Arizona; Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Maryland,
Michigan, New Mexico, Texas and also in Washington state.
The Panteahs have inlaid the eyes and heartline of Sleeping Beauty turquoise and initialed the fetish CAP on the bottom
in their usual fashion.
