Jet is a semi-precious stone of fossilized coal. It is extremely lightweight and has been used in jewelry-making for centuries.
When first beginning to collect Zuni fetish carvings, Colvin Peina (d.) was one of my favorite artists to watch for when his carvings were
posted on the fetish sites in the mid 90s. His bears had a whimsical quality to their posture, very sweet smiles and sometimes it seemed
they had gymnastic expressions as well. It turns out that was a common trait passed down through the Haloo family and shared
among its numerous members. Uncles are Miguel (d.) and Ramie Haloo, Gerald Peina, and mom Tina Sice, dad Ernest Peina, sisters
Claudia Peina, Claudine Haloo, and cousins Craig and Tonia Haloo and Gabe and Troy Sice all share a common carving thread in the
George Haloo Cheechee (d.) style. This beautiful necklaced bear is by Colvin's sister Claudia Peina.
Claudia has inlaid the eyes, mouth, necklace and claws of Sleeping Beauty turquoise. As is usual the fit and finish of her
carving is exceptional, glossy and flawless, as is her inlay. Normally her fetishes are initialed on the bottom but this one is NOT which
is highly unusual for the carver. This would be a wonderful addition to any Zuni fetish collection.
